Brays Crown Schools support children with special needs and other vulnerabilities

Our mission

Inclusive and quality education

In Tanzania, there is little support for children and adults with special needs. Physical and mental disability is often viewed as a blight. Individuals with special needs are often hidden away and are at a much higher risk of sexual exploitation, abuse and homelessness.

Few government schools have the resources necessary to accommodate children with special needs. Many schools are not wheelchair accessible, and children are sometimes confined to rooms where learning is impossible and basic needs are not met. Some private schools in Tanzania offer educational programs for children with special needs, but the cost is prohibitive.

Tumaini Foundation is proud to introduce Brays Crown Schools, a safe place where all children can learn together. Brays Crown is designed for both non-disabled and special-needs children. It currently serves the town of Gairo in the Morogoro region of eastern Tanzania and plans to expand its reach through boarding accommodations.

Our vision

Approved by the Tanzanian government, we are constructing a comprehensive educational facility that includes classrooms, dormitories, dining halls, kitchens, toilets, a health centre, and playing grounds. This initiative is designed to ensure that all children, especially those who have been excluded from government schools, have access to quality education.

We have completed the pre-school and primary school, and currently have 15 students studying with us. Additionally, we have eight staff members. We are looking to expand the facilities to a secondary school and hope to cater to up to 700 vulnerable children. We are currently in Phase 3 of our project, and are aiming to raise $5,000 for flooring and windows for classrooms, accessible toilets, and wired fencing.

Phase 3 - In progress 2025

We are currently raising funds for flooring and windows for classrooms. Other projects include: fencing, construction of accessible toilets and dormitories, and drilling for water.

Phase 2 - Completed Jan 2024

We are pleased to open the pre-school and primary school to the public. Currently, there are 15 students studying in the schools.

Phase 1 - Completed in 2022

Purchase the land for the school.

Support a child with special needs

Tumaini Foundation aims to offer places at Brays Crown Schools free of charge. This means covering all costs associated with caring for and educating the children. To board a child for one year at Brays Crown costs approximately $500.
