Projects
Tumaini Foundation is currently involved in various community projects, with a focus on supporting orphans, children with special needs, and widows. You can help Tumaini Foundation by sharing your skills and time. We welcome volunteers from all over the world.

Orphanage

Our orphanage, located in the heart of Ihumwa village, feeds breakfast, lunch and dinner to 150 children seven days a week and has up to 35 children boarding full-time. We aim to provide a safe place for vulnerable children in the community to eat and play.

Additionally, our social worker regularly conducts home visits to assess the living conditions of children in the community and determine how best the foundation can support community members. This includes financial, material and emotional support.

Many families in the community are unable to provide their children with basic needs, and we aim to assist these families by helping them start small businesses which allow them to be self-sufficient.

Education

One of the most important pillars of our foundation is education because we believe it is the basis of a successful future. Through reading, writing, painting, gardening and athletics, we teach our children about love, respect and resilience. Additionally, we teach the importance of hygiene, such as brushing teeth and washing hands.

We also make regular visits to the local schools and run a daycare/nursery for children too young to go to government school and a special-education inclusive school in Gairo.

We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about education to teach at our nursery and Brays Crown. Since 2008, we have hosted eight volunteer teachers.

Children with special needs

Children with special needs are extremely vulnerable and at a much higher risk for homelessness, dropping out of education and abuse. At Tumaini Foundation, we aim to remove the stigma surrounding physical and mental disabilities.

We support children with special needs by providing them with health insurance, housing, aids such as wheelchairs, food, and education.

Additionally, we run a special-education inclusive school in the town of Gairo, which is designed to accommodate both non-disabled and special-needs children. Brays Crown Schools currently includes a pre-school and primary school, and we aim to expand it to include a secondary school in the near future.

Construction & maintainance

The orphanage was built from the ground up and now includes a nursery school, a living space for the children who reside there full-time, an office for the social worker, two bathrooms, a kitchen and accommodation for volunteers. We welcome volunteers to help with renovating the orphanage.

Additionally, Tumaini Foundation is looking for skilled volunteers to help construct classrooms, lodging and accessible toilets for the special-education school in Gairo.

Widow empowerment

Tumaini Foundation offers support to widows in the local community through material means and training.
In our fight against poverty, we empower widows to produce marketable arts and crafts, ensuring their future financial security. Examples include clay flower pots, tailored items, baskets, flower arrangements, fresh juices, and porridge.

Additionally, we provide parenting training to widows in the community and encourage them to build bonds with the children at the orphanage.

We welcome volunteers with creative skills and business knowledge and experience. They are invited to contribute their knowledge to the production, marketing and sale of the products made by the widows.

Organic farming
We aim to feed the children under our care a balanced diet and have developed farming lands that operate using organic principles in order to achieve this goal.

Additionally, we help teach community members who are interested in organic farming by using demonstration farm plots and utilizing a small garden to train and work with foster families to cultivate vegetables organically. We also host seminars in local schools to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable farming. In areas where land is scarce, communities have learned to recycle bags by planting vegetables in them.
We welcome volunteers with knowledge and skills relating to organic farming. Tasks may include farm preparation, planting, waste management, and improving soil quality.
Volunteering partnerships
Tumaini Foundation works to accomplish its mission through sharing knowledge, experience and skills among individuals and organizations and working together to support vulnerable young people, children with special needs, and widows in the local community. Our organization currently hosts volunteers from international organizations such as WWOOF and Workaway. Additionally, we are open to other partnerships with organizations around the globe that are interested and willing to join and support our efforts.
